1. Welcome to FHGC! Thank you for joining us. Tell me about yourself and what keeps you blooming in your purpose?

My name is Sam! I’m a 24 year-old working in the finance industry in New York, NY. Finance isn’t the easiest industry to be in for multiple reasons; it take a toll on you mentally, emotionally, and physically if you’re not careful. I’ve realized how important it is to make sure to put myself first. Mind, body, and soul.
I recently had a back injury that really changed my perspective on a lot. I was working out six times a week, eating healthy, working crazy hours and didn’t believe in taking breaks. One day in yoga I pushed myself too far and ended up falling out of a headstand and got whiplash, a herniated disk, and a bulged disk. I was so angry and upset with myself because I was at a very advanced level and had been doing headstands for months. It’s also not like me to mess up so I took it pretty hard on myself.
The recovery process was brutal.  For six months I had to go to physical therapy three times a week which included getting twelve shots down my back. Needless to say I wasn’t cleared to workout. I could only do light walking and even that was a beat in itself. I was so discouraged that I started feeling depressed almost. I started getting out of shape, I stopped eating right, I found work more stressful. It was a really hard process, but it actually taught me a lot about myself and how important it is to forgive yourself and pay attention to your body and where your limits lie.
I’m back to working out, but I’m at a beginner level in yoga and am definitely not where I would like to be when it comes to weights and cardio. I feel much more in-tune with my body though and feel like this was a lesson I needed to learn to get to this next level of consciousness.

2. What does wellness mean to you, in one word?

Happiness; that is definitely what wellness means to me. To be happy and maintain a balance of eating right, being active, and finding time for yourself is so important. I know if I don’t get outside at some point during the day I go crazy. I feel better when I’m getting my energy out in a healthy way whether it be going on a walk outdoors or going to some sort of workout class.

3. What’s an exciting accomplishment you have made so far on your wellness journey??

I think an exciting accomplishment has been getting more in sync with my body after my recent injury. I really feel like I notice everything it’s trying to tell me now. If I’m tired, or thirsty, or full I pay attention more and make sure to heed those things. I also eat to the point of satiation versus fullness because I don’t like the way I feel when I’m too full. Even if I’m craving something, I give in. I make sure give my body what it wants and needs. I find it easier to eat healthy and I’m happy with myself.

4. What do you wish you had known at a younger age, in regards to your health and wellness?

I wish I knew to love myself earlier on. I definitely have idolized other women in an unhealthy way and would be upset if I didn’t look like them. I know now that every woman is beautiful in their own way, and I don’t mean that in the corny way. It’s true though and it’s important to recognize your own beauty and to be confident in that.

5. The FH lifestyle is about planting your health on higher ground. What is your biggest advice to someone who is on the path to flourishing heights?

To take the good with the bad and to know that each step is a step in the right direction. Wherever you are is where you’re meant to be. That doesn’t mean you can’t achieve the goals you have set for yourself, it just means you are on the right path if you’re making the conscious efforts to get there every single day.
